July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor and celebrate the unique contributions, achievements, and experiences of individuals with disabilities. At Venture Together, program participants are showcasing their creativity and spirit by creating their own versions of the Disability Pride flag!
Using the official flag as a guideline, each program designed a unique version that reflects its interpretation of pride. These designs then were formed into beautiful lawn flags, proudly displayed outside our program sites for the entire month of July. Each flag will be saved and used in future years, symbolizing our ongoing commitment to disability pride and inclusion.
The Meaning Behind the Flag
The Disability Pride flag, designed by Ann Magill, features five colors on a dark background, each representing different aspects of the disability community:
- Red: Represents physical disabilities.
- Yellow: Symbolizes neurodiversity.
- White: Represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.
- Blue: Stands for emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental illness, anxiety, and depression.
- Green: This is for sensory disabilities, including deafness and blindness.
- Black: Represents the anger and mourning over eugenics and the neglect that disabled people have had to fight against.
The flag’s design reflects the diverse parts of the disability community and highlights the importance of unity and visibility.
Celebrating Our Uniqueness!
As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, let’s recognize the achievements, contributions, and vibrant spirit of the individuals we support, and continue to work towards a world where everyone is seen, heard, and valued.
Happy Disability Pride Month!
