Our letter to U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Michael Lawler

Dear Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand & Rep. Lawler,

I’m writing, as a constituent and as a supporter of services for people with intellectual/developmental (I/DD) disabilities, to urge you to vote NO on any budget proposal that weakens Medicaid.

The recently passed House budget including $880 billion in Medicaid cuts would be detrimental to people with I/DD in New York and nationwide.

More than 130,000 disabled people across New York State receive Medicaid benefits to support residential care, day care, in-home care, and other services. The support system these individuals rely on would be threatened by the pending cuts. Medicaid is not just a safety net; it is a lifeline that allows people with disabilities to live independently, access healthcare, and participate fully in their communities.

Medicaid reductions would directly lead to cuts for hundreds of thousands of jobs in NYS, including the more than 100,000 Direct Support Professionals who provide care and support for people with I/DD every day.

As my representative in Congress, I urge you to speak up for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in my community and statewide as budget negotiations continue. I believe we are a country of people who care for one another, and of people who take special care of our family members, friends, and neighbors who need extra support.

I urge you to:

  • Honor Speaker Mike Johnson’s promise to rule out per-capita caps and changes to the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP). This commitment is critical to ensuring stability in the federal Medicaid funding to NY state and protecting essential services for people with disabilities.
  • Vote NO on any budget proposal that weakens Medicaid.
  • Vote NO on any budget proposal that cuts Social Security and SNAP benefits, which are essential for people with developmental disabilities and countless others.

Thank you for your service, and thank you for hearing my concerns. I urge you to stand up for people with disabilities at this crucial moment.

Thank you.
